SCHENECTADY - A driver crashed into a Schenectady gas pump and flipped his SUV Sunday night, authorities said.
The driver then fled the scene before officers arrived, police said.
The crash happened at about 11 p.m. at the Speedway on Brandywine Avenue at Wiley Street. The SUV ended up on its side. The face of a gas pump came off and a post used to protect pumps from impacts was bent.
A Gazette photographer arrived ahead of officers and captured a photo of a man reaching in to the SUV's sunroof. That man ran off as officers arrived, the photographer said.
A police spokesman confirmed the driver fled and said that the vehicle was unregistered. The investigation continued Monday.
The Schenectady rollover happened on the same evening as another rollover in Rotterdam and a serious motorcycle crash in Glenville.
In Glenville, a motorcyclist was seriously injured at about 11:30 p.m. in a one-vehicle crash on Route 5. Glenville police cited excessive speed in that crash.
In Rotterdam, a vehicle struck a parked car and flipped onto its roof. The driver was taken to an area hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
