SCHENECTADY -- The state's top education official is scheduled to visit Hamilton Elementary School on Thursday to welcome students and staff back to school.

The visit, following back-to-school visits downstate on Wednesday, will give Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia a chance to meet with students, teachers and administrators and learn more about Schenectady's work on so-called social-emotional learning, efforts to bolster a positive school environment and give students more skills for dealing with their emotions in order to learn more effectively.

Elia is scheduled to visit classrooms at the school, which had been identified as one of the state's most struggling districts three years ago, before making its way off a state list of struggling schools, at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. Students across the district return to class on Thursday.
