I’m puzzled by the Sept. 7 front page headline, “Bishop asks review of sex abuse cases.” The headline makes it appear that the bishop took the initiative in asking for a probe. But careful reading of the story makes it clear that the bishop’s letter was written only after receipt of a subpoena from the office of the Attorney General seeking relevant records.

Credit in these cases is due to law enforcement agencies; one would naturally expect a church to respond to a legal summons.
