The Sept. 9 article, “Small rally links city to global movement,” was one of the bright spots in the otherwise gloomy environmental forecast we have become so familiar with.
Jahnn Gibson and the other organizers of the rally put Johnstown on the map as part of the global movement against fossil fuels and in favor or renewable energy. This is significant, especially since they were part of a small group instead of a crowd, which truly takes courage. I believe that it’s in our communities where positive change must take root. Individuals can do a tremendous amount to bring about change and awareness – by their votes and by their willingness to stand up and take on the big issues, even when they may have to confront the prevailing sentiments of their neighbors.
I commend this group of caring and courageous people and I hope that this kind of activism will take hold in other communities, including mine.
