Bowling: Parker shakes off wrist pain to excel

Lefty Jim Parker was so frustrated with the pain he was experiencing in his wrist that he actually considered switching hands to bowl.

Based on his 298 game and 814 triple last week in the Capital District All Star league at Sportsman’s Bowl, the Rotterdam resident made the right decision to stay the course.

“I was just in the zone the other night,” the 45-year-old NY State DMV manager said. “It felt great to have that kind of performance again. I almost switched hands a while ago and considered wrist surgery. I’ve got a bone in my forearm that is too long. They already took a few small bones out, but that didn’t work.

“I’ve been bowling since I was 8 years old, so I was going to keep on bowling, even if I had to switch hands to do so. I was in quite a lot of pain before.”

Fortunately for Parker, he followed old friend John Drexel’s advice and started wearing a Robby’s Revs II wrist brace, which took a lot of pressure off his forearm during his release.

“Giving up bowling was not an option,” Parker said. “I’m one of the few lefties that feel comfortable bowling inside the second arrow. I like to hook the ball. I used to use Brunswick products, but I switched to Roto Grip because their line is more aggressive.”

Parker has compiled some impressive statistics over his near four decades on the lanes. He now has 56 perfect games and 30 800 triples.

“My first couple of 300 games were in high school, and I’m most proud of those, especially the one I threw during the Suburban Council tournament when I was bowling for Colonie High School,” Parker said. “There weren’t that many 300s bowled then, especially in high school, and they made a big deal out of it. I had a couple of perfect games when I was 15, 16 years old, and then it took quite a while for me to get another one. I got a lot of them when I started bowling at Sportsman’s about eight years ago.”

Parker’s Colonie High School team was loaded, as he competed with both Mike and John Drexel, along with Craig Taylor, an extremely talented trio with outstanding individual resumes.

“I grew up with the Drexel brothers, who lived on the same street,” he said. “All those guys could really bowl. We had a great high school team. But I give all the credit for my bowling to my mother. She got me into it, and she kept supporting me all the time. Bowling was a lot different back then, but I still love the sport.”

Parker has averaged as high as 238 and last year averaged 221, despite bowling just once a week.

“It felt great to bowl as well as I did last week, because there are a lot of talented bowlers in that league,” Parker said.
