SCHENECTADY - City police are reporting an increase in the number of reports of car break-ins and asking residents to ensure their car doors are locked, the department said on Facebook.

The cars are rummaged through and stolen from, mostly in the city's Northside neighborhood, police said.

"Though activity appears to be highest in this area, similar reports are also coming in from all parts of the city so every resident should remain vigilant," city police said in the post.

The department has increased patrols in the areas and investigate, but police said the most effective deterrent is ensuring car doors are locked. Residents shout also keep valuables out of sight, police said.
