Weiner: LeClair has tools to become star

It will surprise no local bowling fan in the Capital Region that Connor LeClair has all the right tools to become the next superstar on the lanes.

The 23-year-old son of former PBA50 Player of the Year Brian LeClair took a major step toward reaching an elite level when he won the Scratch Challenge last Sunday at Towne Bowling Academy. Connor LeClair, who works nights at his father’s Revolutions Pro Shop, defeated good friend and fellow Roto Grip staff member Nick Galusha 249-224 in the finals to earn a check for $1,000.

“This is right up there as far as my favorite bowling achievements are concerned,” LeClair said. “This is my third singles win, but winning the Over 50/Under 50 PBA regional with my dad a few years ago will still be No. 1 for a long time. I won a singles event in Fishkill, and I’ve won a few doubles tournaments, but I’m starting to learn a little bit how to win a singles tournament. Before this, I had three second-place singles finishes in a row. It feels pretty good to get this one done.”

LeClair shot a five-game qualifying total of 1,184 to earn the No. 1 seed for the stepladder finals. He was locked in almost all day.

“I threw my Roto Grip Idol all day after switching to it in the third frame of my first game,” he said. “I got lined up in the second game and made plenty of good shots. That’s about as good as I can throw it. I would say that the shot was a little tricky in the beginning, but I kept moving left. I had a little hold area in the middle.”

Despite LeClair’s immense physical skills, the former standout pitcher wasn’t having a great season until making a few adjustments recently.

“I’ve been bowling really badly this year,” he said. “I haven’t made a cut in a while. I switched to using 15-pound balls about two-and-a-half weeks ago, and I redid my pitches and my span. Working at Revolutions Pro Shop, I’ve got a chance to bounce ideas off my dad. I work at my accounting job during the day, and then I head over to the pro shop at night. I get plenty of knowledge while I’m working in the pro shop.”

The Coxsackie-Athens High School and Fordham University product has a powerful release and can throw as hard as anyone.

“Actually, I’ve been trying to tone down the speed a little bit,” he said. “If I get too amped up, I throw it too hard, and the ball doesn’t hook. I was trying to keep my ball speed a little slower today and make good shots.”

LeClair said his confidence is at an all-time high, and he can’t wait for his next tournament.

“I do most of my bowling at Del Lanes as far as leagues and practice,” he said. “I have been going to a few New England Bowling Association evens, and I try to bowl in anything around here. I bowl as much as I can. Now that I have a full-time accounting job during the day, I don’t have to worry about the money I make from bowling that much. I enjoy the game more. This win feels great.”

Although the top five advanced to the stepladder finals, there was a tie for fifth place, with Matt Sherman edging RJ Martinez 219-190 in the rolloff. In the stepladder finals, fourth-seeded Joe VanDerLinden beat Sherman 205-193, third-seeded Jeff Young topped VanDerLinden 233-195 and second-seeded Galusha downed Young 233-175.

Galusha ($725), Young ($600), VanDerLinden ($480), Sherman ($380), Martinez ($260), Matt Fazzone ($220), Brian Hall ($21), Steve Wagoner ($190) and Ken Smith ($175) rounded out the 10 cashers in the 52-player field.

Nick Stricos rolled a 300 game en route to a program-best 783 triple, and Tommy Donato recorded a 770 to pace the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League Monday night at Towne Bowling Academy.

In the Sportsman’s Majors Monday night at Sportsman’s Bowl, Andy Smith put together a 290 opening game and a 784 triple, while Christopher Fawcett rolled a 760.

John DeVarnne delivered a 963 four-game series, and Ray Haupt rolled a perfect game in the Frank DePalma Boulevard Classic Tuesday night at Boulevard Bowl.
