In the Pocket: Rotterdam Invitational proves successful

Schalmont High School boys’ bowling coach Hugo McGroty couldn’t stop smiling after reflecting on the hugely successful Rotterdam Invitational Bowling Tournament Monday at Sportsman’s Bowl.

Not only did McGroty and his crew put on a spectacular event, drawing 27 teams with between six and eight players per squad, but McGroty’s Sabres won their own boys’ small school division, as well as the overall boys’ title, for the first time in his long 20-year tenure.

Sportsman’s Bowl was filled to the brim with competitors and spectators. There wasn’t a seat left, with dozens of parents and other spectators standing in the back to watch and cheer on their favorite bowlers. Yours truly stood most of the day, trying to observe as many of the next generation of bowling stars as I could. Don’t forget that Sportsman’s features probably the most seating and best view for spectators of any Capital Region bowling center. The place was so crowded that it reminded me of sectional time in February, when Boulevard Bowl is so full that you can hardly move from lane to lane without accidentally knocking into somebody.

“I’m very proud of the way the tournament went,” McGroty said. “We had 27 schools. Everybody could bring up to eight players, and it averaged about seven per team. I’d say we had almost 200 kids in the place. The environment was great.”

But McGroty, a longtime sectional tournament official, was even more proud of his young team, which put on a surprising early-season performance in the unofficial scholastic tournament opener.

“I had no expectations of us doing this,” McGroty said. “After the first game, when Cobleskill beat us with their 1,017, I thought we had a good chance of finishing fifth, because the other three schools in our division had some pretty dominating players. We had a great team effort. All of our guys were rooting for each other, and it was nice to see. We have a couple of guys who can dominate the lanes with power, but we also had a strong effort throughout the lineup.”

Schalmont knocked down 3,086 pins with a balanced performance. Junior Jarred Frank led the way with a 243-677. Co-captain Tommy Moyer, a lefty and fellow junior, added a 234-658, while freshman Sean Howlan, McGroty’s grandson, rolled a 224-602. Freshmen Richard Pitsas (205-587) and David Squires (204-562) also bowled solidly.

“I think this was a great start for us this year,” said Moyer, an honor student with strong family roots in the game. “This is going to kick us off for what should be a great season. We are a young team with all of us coming back next year. We may have a shot of winning the sectionals, or at least of being highly competitive.”

Moyer, who learned his game bowling in the Towne Bowling Academy junior program Saturday mornings, takes his role as a team leader very seriously.

“I just try to keep everyone calm and thinking about the team more than the individual scores,” Moyer said. “Some of us, including myself, and can get frustrated with our own games, and it can get us down. If I can keep everyone’s heads on our shoulders, that should help us stay competitive.”

The Mohonasen girls, paced by Elizabeth DeLorenzo (592 high triple) and Katie Adamec (256 high single), won their large school division, while Josh Ross, son of SUNY Schenectady bowling coach Ray Ross, shot a 266 high single in the boys’ large school division. CBA’s Tim Knowles (730 high triple) and Cobleskill-Richmondville’s Jonah Rys (725 high triple) were other individual standouts.

A pat on the back for everyone who helped put on a fabulous event. Sportsman’s co-owner Paul Adkins and his crew made 28 18-cut pizzas to be served to all the competitors, along with soda and water, following the tournament. McGroty’s tournament committee, including Brian Brown, Len Reyngoudt and Steve Renzi, did a fine job of scorekeeping in a timely manner, and desk man Mark Hilton kept everyone moving by trouble-shooting any problems on the lanes.

MAJOR BOWLING
Jeff Young rolled a 300 game during a 777 triple, and Chip Tashjian shot a 769 in the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League Monday night at Towne Bowling Academy.

In the Sportsman’s Majors Monday night at Sportsman’s Bowl, Matt Swiatocha ripped a 778, and average leader Chris Fawcett tossed a 771.

Anthony Scaccia connected for a 955 four-game series, Keith Lawyer shot a 951 and John DeVarnne rolled a 300 game in the Frank DePalma Boulevard Classic Tuesday night at Boulevard Bowl.

In the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Mixed Doubles Wednesday night at Towne Bowling Academy, Joe VanDerLinden (1,047) and Don Herrington (1,028) topped the men on a high-scoring four-game card, and Janelle Irwin (989) paced the women.
