MALTA -- The Town Board on Monday unanimously named Darren O'Connor as the new town supervisor, replacing Vincent DeLucia, who resigned at Monday's meeting.

O'Connor has been the town's deputy supervisor the last three years, and was also deputy town attorney. He assumes the new role immediately and will serve through Dec. 31, 2019. An election will be held in November 2019; O'Connor hasn't said if it will be a candidate.

DeLucia, who was elected town supervisor in 2015 and re-elected in 2017, said he is resigning to spend more time with his family, including four grandchildren.

"I am honored and humbled to have been appointed town supervisor last night," O'Connor said on Tuesday. "I pledge to continue to implement the great progress achieved by my predecessor and strive to keep Malta town-tax free, while improving economic growth and recreational amenities."

"I can think of no better choice to follow me in Town Hall than Darren O'Connor," DeLucia said.

O'Connor, 64, is an attorney who has worked for the state Attorney General's Office and state police, retiring as chief counsel to the state police. He has been deputy supervisor since 2016.

While he could have been acting supervisor without Town Board action, the board appointment gives O'Connor voting power at Town Board meetings and on the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors.
