SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Saratoga Casino Hotel is building an outdoor gaming terrace to allow its patrons, for the first time, to smoke while gaming.
Casino officials said Wednesday that they recently broke ground on the project, being built along the apron of the harness racing track.
The 1,800-square-foot covered terrace will have 50 gaming machines and will use infrared heating panels to keep the area warm during cold weather months. It will also have vaulted ceiling fans for cooling during warm weather. There will be an air circulation system that will allow guests to smoke, and officials said it will provide a unique vantage point during harness racing season.
"We're very much looking forward to adding this highly requested amenity to our property," said Alex Tucker, the casino hotel's general manager. "This will be the first of a number of new exciting changes we have planned for 2019."
A new entrance from the casino floor will provide access to the terrace, allowing guests to move back and forth between the two.
AJA Architecture and Planning of Glens Falls is overseeing the project, with Bonacio Construction of Saratoga Springs doing the construction.
The casino-hotel-track complex on Crescent Avenue has more than 1,700 slot machines, as well as a 117-room luxury hotel with restaurants.
