Thirty-nine of the best 50-and-older bowlers in the Capital Region and beyond are eligible to compete for a big payday Saturday in the New Era Senior Tournaments Invitational at 1 p.m. at Sportsman’s Bowl.

Sponsored by Andy Smith’s Universal Auto Parts, the NEST Invitational has a guaranteed top prize of $1,000, with the runner-up earning $500. Half the field will cash.

Jim Burton started the NEST once-a-month series for senior scratch bowlers in 2011. The unique format allows competitors to battle for qualifying berths against bowlers in their own age groups: 50-55, 56-66 and 67-plus. A quarter of the field advances through their age group, and the rest of the match-play field is filled with wild-card entries, which are the next best scorers regardless of age group.

There are four games of qualifying before head-to-head match play begins. In normal NEST events, all the individual matches are single games, but for the NEST Invitational, the first round of match play will be a two-game, total pins match.

“The NEST Invitational format is a little bit different. We wanted to make the match play a little more demanding in this tournament,” NEST director Jim Burton said. “We would have liked to go to two-game total matches for the entire tournament, but it takes too much time, so we settled on having a two-game match in the opening round,” Burton said.

“One-third of the field will make the roll-offs. Half of the field will earn at least $100 because of the extra money that is in the purse.”

Only bowlers who have competed in five of the 11 regular NEST tournaments are eligible for this special event. “I know that two of the guys who are eligible – Al Roth and Ken Merchant – are in Florida now, so they won’t be competing,” Burton said. ‘I would guess that we will have maybe around 35 guys in the field. It’s hard to pick a favorite, because in head-to-head matches, anything can happen. One of the reasons we went to a two-game format for the first round of match play is to allow the talent to show. The longer the competition, the more chance that the most talented bowler will rise to the top.”

Burton, who competes in the 67-plus division, owns seven NEST titles, including doubles events. Regional pro Chris Fedden is the all-time leader with eight victories. Other multiple winners to keep an eye on include Gene Speenburgh (five wins), Smith (five wins), Ron Gardner (four wins), Sonny Dorstek (four wins), former U.S. Open champion Brian Boghosian (three wins), Paul Dumas (three wins), PBA50 member Don Herrington of Ballston Lake (three wins), Rich Strath (three wins) and Pete Linck (two wins). Herrington has been bowling extremely well in recent PBA regional and other scratch events.

Other top contenders based on recent form include Scott Rogers, Jim Geiger, Craig Schoonmaker, Joe Talarczyk and Ed Gumm.

Jack Scaccia Jr. won the inaugural NEST Invitational in 2015. Steve Ferraro won in 2016 and Speenburgh took the title a year ago.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

It will be a busy weekend for Burton, who not only is competing and helping to run the NEST Invitational, but will also be in charge of the Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York (A.L.B.A.N.Y.) doubles tournament Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Hometown Lanes.

Only bowlers with averages less than 215 are eligible for the A.L.B.A.N.Y. doubles event. Handicap will be 100 percent, with a maximum of 75 pins per game. The field is limited to the first 45 teams. Top prize will be $1,000.

“Right now, we have about 35 or so teams,” Burton said. “We’ll probably end up with 35-40 teams. Sometimes, we get surprised by the amount of walk-ins, but we keep encouraging people to let us know if they are coming. The high-water mark for our singles events so far is 82 or 83 bowlers. We are happy for that, but we are always looking for more. If we get 40 teams, we would be very happy for our first doubles event, and we would most likely schedule another one."

STRIKES & SPARES

PBA50 member Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, a five-time winner on the regular PBA Tour with more than $1.7 million in career earnings, teamed up with Howard Ayers to win the inaugural NYSCOPBA Over/Under Doubles tournament last weekend at Towne Bowling Academy. They split the top prize of $2,500. Ray Cyr and Larry Porter finished second ($1,300), while the tandems of Ed Czyzewski with John Riozzi and Bruce Hall with Andrew Hall  earned $750 each.

The Schenectady USBC board of directors will hold a meeting Sunday at 2 p.m. at Boulevard Bowl.

Towne Bowling Academy will host its ninth annual Handicap Team Tournament beginning Friday at 9:30 p.m. and running weekends through Jan. 27. Entry fee is $160 per four-person team, and top prize is $4,000 per team, guaranteed. There is also an optional singles event with $450 for first place.
