BALLSTON SPA -- A Saratoga Springs man has been sentenced to two years in Saratoga County Jail, after being found guilty of beating a dog to death in October of 2017.

Aaron Brinkley, 31, was convicted of aggravated animal cruelty in County Court on Sept. 24, following a jury trial. He was sentenced by Saratoga County Court Judge James A. Murphy III to the maximum allowed by law, according to District Attorney Karen A. Heggen's office.

Brinkley's conviction stems from an incident on Quiet Harbor Drive in Saratoga Springs on Oct. 6, 2017. He was accused of brutally beating a Boston terrier named Riko with a hammer, causing severe injuries. Trial testimony revealed Brinkley hit Riko several times, and the dog responded by biting him on the thumb. Brinkley then used the hammer on the dog, fracturing teeth and causing internal injuries.

Brinkley then tossed the dog onto the apartment's balcony, where it died, Heggen's office said, citing trial testimony.

In addition to the jail time, Murphy issued an order prohibiting Brinkley from owning any animals for 50 years.

"This is another tragic case where an animal is subjected to continuous, cruel and substantial violence, resulting in death," said Heggen. "Through the collaborative efforts of the Saratoga Springs Police Department and (Assistant District Attorney Katherine) DeMartino, a complete picture was painted for the trial jury, which showed the terrible injuries sustained by Riko the Boston terrier. While no sentence can ever bring Riko back, we believe the sentence is a just result."
