ALBANY — Going shopping, playing the slots and drinking beer are the top reasons Uber drivers get summoned for rides within the Capital Region.
The app-based transportation company on Wednesday released a list of the top destinations in the Albany area so far in 2018, the second year its ride-sharing services have been available in upstate New York.
This year, its drivers have most commonly dropped passengers off at:
1 Crossgates Mall, Guilderland
2 Rivers Casino & Resort, Schenectady
3 Pearl Street Pub, Albany
4 City Beer Hall, Albany
5 Saratoga race track, Saratoga Springs
6 Siena College, Loudonville
7 Collins Circle, UAlbany
8 Indian Quad, UAlbany
9 State Quad, UAlbany
10 Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs
Ride-sharing services such as Lyft and Uber have been legal in New York City for the better part of a decade, but it was not until June 29, 2017, that they could legally operate in the rest of the state.
Upstate New York was one of the few places where the practice was still illegal. The restaurant, entertainment and hospitality industries fought a sustained and ultimately successful effort to get the state Legislature to change that.
