Clifton Park lefty Pete Dougherty is perhaps more recognized for his writing skills as the longtime sports reporter for the Albany Times Union, but the 61-year-old Penn State graduate is also among the most talented — and underrated — scratch bowlers in the Capital Region.

Dougherty proved he could win a major bowling tournament just as easily as write about one last weekend when he captured the prestigious New Era Senior Tournaments Invitational Championship at Sportsman’s Bowl. Dougherty knocked off several of the area’s best over-50 bowlers, including fellow lefty Scott Rogers 236-226 in the championship game, to pick up a check for $1,000.

“Monetarily, this is the third time I’ve won $1,000 in a bowling tournament,” Dougherty said. “I won $1,000 for winning a Huck Finn doubles tournament on TV, and I also won the Empire State Open Pro-Am. I would say winning this tournament is right up there with winning that Huck Finn event on television. This was a high-caliber field, and I had to bowl really well to get through all four of my matches. It was definitely a thrill.”

Dougherty, who bowls in the Daily Gazette league Tuesday afternoons and leads that league in scoring average at Sportsman’s, registered a four-game qualifying score of 880 and then defeated Steve Gabriel in a two-game match 473-467 before eliminating Joe Talarczyk 255-237 and regional pro Chris Fedden of Colonie 197-157 in single-game matches, setting up his exciting game with Rogers in the finale.

Dougherty started off slowly in the championship game with several 7-pin spares, but despite some thumb issues, he eventually started to carry for strikes. He thought he lost the finale when he missed a 7-pin in the 10th frame, giving Rogers a chance to mark and win the tournament. But Rogers also left a pesky 7-pin and missed his spare, as well.

Rogers earned $500 for finishing second. Mark Rathbun and Fedden earned $350 for finishing third/fourth, while Mike Miller, John Riozzi, Brian Boghosian and Talrczyk pocketed $250 each for finishing fifth through eighth. Only bowlers who competed in five of the 11 NEST events this season were eligible for this tournament, which could be the last in a while as tournament director Jim Burton takes a sabbatical and ponders whether to continue the monthly tests.

Dougherty, who also covers golf and UAlbany basketball among his many other beats at the TU, has a solid resume that includes eight 300 games, five triples of 790 or higher and a singles victory in the now defunct Northern Bowlers Association. He finished second twice in the Bob Gild, the NBA’s signature event. He’s also finished second in both another NEST event and a Huck Finn singles scratch tournament.

“It’s important for me to support the local events while I’m able to do it,” Dougherty said. “The longer I bowl, the more I crave the competition. That’s why I bowl. It’s not necessarily for the money. There’s nothing like bowling head-to-head.”

Although Dougherty doesn’t hook the ball as much as some of his competitors, he has plenty of speed and is an excellent spare shooter.

“I love bowling head-to-head,” he said. “Against the younger kids, I always felt I was strong mentally. They had more hand than I do, but I don’t show my emotions, and I keep grinding away. That’s the mentality you need in match play. In the longer formats, the more talented bowlers will usually prevail, but I try to make my spares and figure over 10 frames I always have a chance.”

Dougherty recently dropped down from 16 pounds to 15 pounds in his bowling equipment and purchased a couple of new balls, including the Storm Hy Road X.

“I prefer moderate conditions,” he said. “I like it when spares mean something. If you are not lined up, a shootout is hard. I always prefer a little tougher shot where if I stay in the pocket and make my spares, I have a chance,” he said. “In today’s conditions, you need good ball speed. My speed helps me. I bowled nine games on Saturday, and I still felt good at the end. I think dropping down to 15 pounds helped me with that.”

STRIKES & SPARES
Lefty Will Hearley collected his 26th 800 triple last week in the Town N Country Thursday Night Classic. Hearley, who has 39 perfect games, rolled games of 286, 279 and 258 for an 823.

Jimmy Serbalik, competing in the Frog Island league at Hometown Lanes, rolled a 726 triple with his right hand and a 726 triple with his left in the same match. Yes, you read that correctly. Serbalik has competed in leagues with either hand for many years.

Towne Bowling Academy’s ninth annual Handicap Team Tournament continues this Sunday with squads at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event runs through Jan. 27.

Sunday is the last chance to earn a free entry into another squad. Entry fee is $160 per four-person team, and top prize is $4,000 per team, guaranteed. There is also an optional singles event with $450 for first place. Handicap will be 90 percent of 225, with a maximum of 50 pins per person.

Joey Herrington and Matt Shkaf shot a three-game handicap total of 1,411 to win last weekend’s Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York (A.L.B.A.N.Y.) doubles tournament at Hometown Lanes. Other top teams were Don St. Andrew with Bob Peck (1,403, $450), Dwayne Dragt with Tom Pierce (1,374, $220) and

Sarah Morris with Rick DeGroff (1,368, $160). Thirty-five teams competed.

Jaidyn Rose, a freshman at Middleburgh High School, bowled an 811 triple in her Western Athletic Conference match with Duanesburg.

MAJOR BOWLING
Joe Rozniewski recorded a perfect game en route to an 810 triple, Chris Mazone drilled a 299-800 and Jay Diamond also had a 300 game in the Sportsman’s Majors Monday night at Sportsman’s Bowl.

Joe VanDerLinden tossed a 300 game and a 784 triple, Mike DiCerbo rolled a 772 and Liz Kuhlkin fired a 768 to pace the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League Monday night at Towne Bowling Academy. J&F Lawn Care clinched the first-half championship.

John Askew hammered a 1,048 four-game series, and  Lindsey McPhail tossed a 954 to lead the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Mixed Doubles league Wednesday night at Towne Bowling Academy.

Brian Hart rolled a 977 four-game series, and Don Herrington posted a 930 to lead the Frank DePalma Boulevard Classic Tuesday night at Boulevard Bowl.
