COLONIE -- The director of a state program for children was drunk when she rolled her car and fled on foot Sunday evening, police said.

Police used dogs to track her and she was apprehended within 40 minutes of the crash, police said.

Sheila M. McBain, 56, of Latham told officers she is the director for the state central register for the Office of Children and Family Services, police said.

Confirmation of her employment status was not available Monday from the state office.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. on First Street, near the railroad tracks, police said. McBain struck a concrete post, which is what caused her vehicle to roll over, they said.

Once officers found McBain, they administered field sobriety tests, which she failed, police said.

McBain was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, as well as leaving the scene of a property damage accident and using a portable electronic device while driving.

She was released to return to court later.
