MAYFIELD -- State police on Monday identified the women injured in a fire Sunday morning at a Mayfield trailer home.
Authorities also identified the police officers -- two state troopers and a Fulton County sheriff's corporal -- who rescued one of the women from the burning structure.
State police identified the women in the fire as Kelly S. Fancher, 57, and Sally A. Stanton, 78. Both were taken to Syracuse Upstate Medical Center for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation, Stanton by helicopter. They remained there Monday in serious condition.
Fancher left the trailer home on her own, but Stanton remained trapped in the kitchen, police said.
The three officers were the first to arrive at 434 Nine Mile Tree Road and found the front of the home engulfed in flames. They quickly learned from onlookers that someone was trapped inside. Troopers Russell Dennie and Ronald Dacre, as well as Fulton County sheriff's Cpl. Robert Furman, entered through the rear of the residence and found Stanton in the kitchen in obvious distress, state police said.
Fulton County Fire Coordinator Steven Santa Maria praised the officers' actions in a prepared statement.
Furman, Dennie and Dacre "went well above and beyond the call of duty, putting themselves in extreme danger to effect the rescue of an individual from an untenable situation," Santa Maria said. "They are to be commended for their heroic actions."
The investigation into the fire continued, but preliminary information suggests it started accidentally with a small cooking appliance, state police said.
