ST. JOHNSVILLE -- A vacant house on Route 5 in the Town of St. Johnsville was destroyed by fire late Monday night.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were called to the home at Route 5 and Fox Road at about 11:47 p.m. by a passerby.

They arrived to find the building in flames. The St. Johnsville Fire Department, with help from surrounding departments, extinguished the blaze. The building, however, was a total loss, Montgomery County Sheriff Jeff Smith said.

When Smith arrived, the building was fully engulfed. A photo of the blaze posted to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Facebook page showed the windows lit up with flames and flames shooting through the roof.

Though vacant, the property owners had been at the building earlier in the day to get items, Smith said.

The investigation into the cause was ongoing, Smith said. The Montgomery County Fire Investigation Team responded.

The St. Johnsville Fire Department was assisted by Fort Plain, Canajoharie, Oppenheim, South Minden, Ames and Rural Grove.

St. Johnsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Montgomery County Sheriff and state police and county fire coordinator and emergency services also responded.
