Republicans must take back their party
Fact: Trump has destroyed the Republican Party of Lincoln and Reagan, but it’s not too late.
The Republicans in Congress should declare Trump a “lame duck” president and work with Democrats to diminish his powers now, and not wait for the Mueller report.
They should quickly pass laws (by two-thirds majority) that will limit the president’s executive powers, especially in regard to shutdowns and states of emergency. Sitting Republican senators and congressmen need to start rebuilding their party now.
A population drop is on the horizon
This is in response to Doreen Harris’ Jan. 12 letter, “Include population in climate change fight.” She states that “every individual should assess the “need” to reproduce” in order to fight climate change. The reduction in population began several years ago. The fertility rate (number of children per female) in the United States is below 1.7 and falling. Just recently, it dropped again. It requires a rate of 2.1 to replace the population we have; 2 to replace the husband and wife and 0.1 for early deaths. In Mexico, the rate has dropped from around 6 to just above 2.
In most European countries, Italy, France, etc., the rate is well below that. It’s about 1.3 in Russia. In China, the rate is just above 1.1, even with a one-child-per-family policy, which has been changed,. But people there aren’t having more than one child due to numerous factors. In India, many sections also have a low fertility rate. It’s only in Africa that the rate is higher, but deaths are also higher. Projections are for the U.S. population to stop growing in 2040, level off, and then begin to drop in 2050. Without immigrants, we would see a quicker decline in population numbers. Be not stressed, Doreen, as the fight is being made.
Consider the effect of vapor on climate
Models of climate change are little more than educated guesses. For one thing, models don’t even include the most common global warming gas, water vapor, which is far more common than CO2 or methane.
The reason modelers don’t include water vapor is because it’s too difficult to model. It varies from region to region and from season to season. But that’s no reason for not attempting to model it. We do know that warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air. So as the atmosphere warms, there is a synergistic effect, as warming begets more water vapor from the oceans, which enters the atmosphere and begets more warming.
Melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet is 50 percent higher than previously measured and is a major cause of concern. Lobes of the ice sheet may surge. Glaciers may advance, not at the rate of a few inches per day; they can surge up to 100 feet per day.
The cause of these surges is unclear, but Greenland has conditions that seem ripe for surging. Water is flowing at the base of the glaciers, which decouples the glaciers from bedrock. And the leading base of the glaciers is being melted by seawater.
Should Greenland completely de-glaciate by 2200, most coastal cities will be underwater. Venice will cease to exist and damage in the United States alone will be in the trillions of dollars.

Trump is nation’s national emergency
The only true national emergency this country is facing is the urgency of removing Trump from office.
