Young dancers from across the Capital Region will have a chance to share the limelight with the New York City Ballet at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center this summer.
On Sunday, March 10, New York City Children's Ballet Master Dena Abergel will audition local children to dance with the New York City Ballet when it comes to SPAC in July. The auditions are for approximately 50 children and teen roles in Balanchine's Coppélia, which premiered at SPAC, as well as Balanchine's Mozartiana.
"Bringing story ballet Coppélia, which features a large cast of local children, back to SPAC’s stage where it first premiered is another wonderful way to involve the community and to give children an unforgettable opportunity to experience great art-making from the other side of the stage,” Elizabeth Sobol, President & CEO of Saratoga Performing Arts Center, said in a statement.
Open roles for Coppélia include twenty-four girls, between four feet, two inches and four feet, eleven inches tall. Understudies will also be cast. Roles for Mozartiana include four girls and two understudies ages 9-12 with advanced ballet technique who are between four feet, six inches tall. Applicants should have at least two years of ballet training.
Additionally, there will be six roles for girls ages 14-18 in Coppélia. They must be between five feet, two inches, and five feet six inches. There are also six roles available for boys ages 14-18, who are five feet, five inches or taller. Applicants should have at least two years of ballet training.
Dancers are encouraged to send pre-audition videos by February 10 to the New York City Children's Ballet at [email protected] Audition check-in will begin at 12:15 on Sunday, March 10 at the National Museum of Dance of the School of the Arts Studios (99 South Broadway, Saratoga Springs).
Those cast for Coppélia will start rehearsal on June 30 at the National Museum of Dance School of the Arts. Mozartiana rehearsals will begin on July 7. Teens in Coppélia will have two rehearsals starting on July 14, in advance of the company's stage rehearsal.
Coppélia, a comedic ballet, was co-commissioned by SPAC and first premiered at the venue in 1974. This year, the performance will be held at 8 p.m. on July 18 and 19 and at 2 p.m. on July 20.
Mozartiana was choreographed to a Tschaikovsky composition derived from Mozart piano pieces. It will be featured at SPAC as a part of the Tschaikovsky and Balanchine program at 8 p.m. on July 16 and at 2 p.m. on July 18.
