According to weather experts, the wintry temperatures experienced across the region Wednesday don't come close to the coldest recorded temps in the Capital Region.

After a storm dropped a foot or more of snow in some areas, making for a treacherous commute Tuesday, the National Weather Service on Wednesday issued a wind advisory for much of the region, warning of gusts of up to 50 mph.

Temperatures were expected to fall as low as minus 6 overnight -- a good 22 degrees warmer than the coldest temperature ever recorded in the area, on Jan. 19, 1971, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Joe Villani.

"It's pretty unusual. In the past two to three decades, we've had an absence of these temperatures," he said.

Here are the 10 coldest temperature records for Albany International Airport, arranged chronologically, according to the Weather Service:

  • Minus 24, on Jan. 5, 1904
  • Minus 26, On Jan. 31, 1948
  • Minus 24, on Jan. 14, 1957
  • Minus 25, on Jan. 11, 1968
  • Minus 26, on Jan. 12, 1968
  • Minus 22, on Dec. 25, 1969
  • Minus 24, on Jan. 19, 1970
  • Minus 23, on Jan. 17, 1971
