For John Askew, less is more when it comes to his bowling game.

The 38-year-old Duanesburg resident prefers to concentrate on what he does well rather than complicate things by trying to emulate his peers. Recently, that recipe for success is paying huge dividends.

When Askew rolled a perfect game on the way to an 835 triple and a whopping 1,085 four-game series last week, he topped the high-powered Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Mixed Doubles league. That’s no small achievement, considering all the elite scratch bowlers in that league at Towne Bowling Academy.

“It was an unbelievable night,” Askew said. “I started the first game with the front seven, and I left a 10-pin. Then I started the next game with the front nine, and I left another 10-pin in the 10th frame. I just wanted that 300 game in the worst way. My doubles partner [Chris Allen-Valenzuela] told me not to worry and that I would do it the next game. So I started stringing them again. It was quite a thrill. Right now, I’m between Scott Rogers and Joe VanDerLinden — two of the best bowlers around — in scoring average. To be next to them is really something.

“I’m a straight, down-and-in bowler, who likes to go right up the 10th board. I like to play nice and easy and keep my speed consistent, right around 17 miles per hour. I love my new ball, the Vintage Vapor Zone. I’ve had it a couple of months now, and it allows me to use the same ball all night. I didn’t have to switch balls, and I was able to make small adjustment through the night and keep carrying.”

A few weeks back, Askew rolled another first-three 800 triple with a 290-800 en route to a 1,048 four-game series. He now has eight 800 triples and 11 perfect games.

“I don’t know what it is, whether my game is maturing or what, but I’m doing a better job now reading the lanes. I know how to keep myself calm,” Askew said. “When I throw a bad shot, I know what I did wrong. I know how to keep to my strengths. The biggest thing for me is my speed. When my feet get slow, my game goes bad.”

Askew, who is currently averaging 237, is no stranger to high achievements on the lanes. He grew up in Rotterdam and bowled four seasons of varsity on the Schalmont High School team under the legendary Hugo McGroty.

“Nobody really taught me the game, but I’ve been bowling since I was 5 years old,” he said. “It’s just a sport I’ve really loved over the years. It seems like since I’ve turned 30, my game has gotten better with age.”

Before this season, Askew’s best year was when he nearly won the average title in the Galaxy league Friday nights at Boulevard Bowl.

“At one point that season, my average was 246, but Tony Palumbo sneaked up on me and beat me at the end. I ended up finishing second in average with a 241, but being beaten out by Tony Palumbo is understandable. He’s a great bowler.”

Askew would love to bowl more than once a week, but he has other priorities and hobbies. A state worker for O.D. Heck, Askew loves to spend family time with his wife, Jennifer, and his two boys, 7-year-old Brayden and 5-year-old Chase.

“I do dabble in some tournaments, like the recent Team Handicap Tournament at Towne, but family comes first,” he said.

Askew also enjoys hunting and all types of motor racing with his boys.
