CHAMPS SEEDED NO. 1

Twelve champions from the 2018 state meet qualifier are seeded No. 1. Several return in a different weight class from a year ago. The list includes Stevo Poulin of Shenendehowa (DI 106 No. 1, 99 champ in 2018), Ryan Sleezer of Queensbury (DI 113 No. 1, 106 champ in 2018), Brock Delsignore of Shenendehowa (DI 145 No. 1, DI 120 champ with South Glens Falls in 2018), Nik Koch of Averill Park (DI 220 No. 1), Jake Stangle of Colonie (DI 285 No. 1), Caleb Svingala of Maple Hill (DII 106 No. 1, 99 champ in 2018), Joe Scheeren of Galway (DII 113 No. 1, 106 champ in 2018), Trent Svingala of Maple Hill (DII 132 No. 1, 120 champ in 2018), Zack Lawrence of Duanesburg (DII 152 No. 1), Ethan Cooper of Cobleskill-Richmondville (DII 170 No. 1, 160 champ in 2018), Nolan McNeill of Warrensburg/Bolton (DII 195 No. 1, 182 champ in 2018) and Craig Sawyer of Hoosick Falls (DII 285).

BULLDOGS HAVE MOST

Cobleskill-Richmondville has a meet-leading three No. 1 seeds in Greg Hotaling (DII 138), Cooper (DII 170) and Jeff Crooks (DII 220), who each are coming off Section II Class CC tournament titles and among them have over 100 wins on the season. Columbia, Niskayuna, Saratoga Springs, Shenendehowa, Duanesburg, Maple Hill and Warrensburg/Bolton each have a pair of No. 1 seeds.

ONE MORE TIME?

Queensbury senior twins Ryan Sleezer and Dylan Sleezer could find themselves grappling each other for the third time this season, with Dylan Sleezer seeded No. 3 in the Division I 113-pound bracket where his brother is No. 1. Ryan Sleezer decisioned his sibling in the Section II Class B final 7-5 and also in the title bout at the Queensbury Holiday Tournament 9-8.

STEPPING STONE

Poulin used his Division I 99-pound first-place effort at the 2018 state qualifier to build momentum toward a New York championship. The sophomore has yet to lose a high school match to an athlete from a New York school.

Svingala followed up his first-place performances at the Division II 2017 (106 pounds) and 2018 (120 pounds) state meet qualifiers with New York championships. The senior hasn't lost a match since his freshman year when he was at Albany Academy and placed fourth at the state Division I meet.

Lawrence followed up his first-place showing at the 2018 Division II state meet qualifier with a third at the New York championships in the 152-pound bracket. Like Poulin and Svingala, the senior is undefeated this season.

LOCAL FLAVOR

Aside from Lawrence, four other Schenectady County wrestlers will compete as No. 1 seeds. The group includes Charie Grygas of Duanesburg (DII 160), Ben Catrambone of Niskayuna (DI 126), Jake Deguire of Mohonasen (DI 132) and Peter Meshkov of Niskayuna (DI 160).

Saratoga County has No. 1 seeds in Poulin (DI 106), Eric Griskowitz of Saratoga Springs (DI 138), Delsignore (DI 145), Jakai Townsend of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (DI 170), Brant Robinson of Saratoga Springs (DI 195), Stangle (DI 285) and Scheeren (DII 113).
