COLONIE -- A Ticonderoga man was arrested after he attempted to have sex with a 13-year-old girl in Colonie, according to police.

The girl was, in fact, an undercover police investigator, so police were waiting for the man when he showed up in Colonie, police said.

John F. West, 48, of 1334 Route 9N, Ticonderoga, was charged with second-degree attempted rape and first-degree attempted dissemination of indecent material to a minor, both felonies.

Colonie’s Computer Crimes Unit made the arrest after a six-week investigation, police said. They arrested him on Feb. 1 and announced the arrest Wednesday.

The investigation began when West sent an electronic message to the undercover investigator, believing the recipient to be a 13-year-old girl, police said.

The communication included internet and cellphone text conversations of a sexual nature, police said. A meeting was set up for a parking at a Colonie business and West was arrested when he arrived.

Police have seized his digital devices for examination.

Investigators asked that anyone with information about West regarding his contact with children call them at 518-783-2744.

West owns Quality Automotive in Ticonderoga.

The FBI and Warren County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the case.
