Police identify Amsterdam native killed in snowmobile crash

Police identify Amsterdam native killed in snowmobile crash

HERKIMER COUNTY -- Calling hours and funeral services have been set for Amsterdam native Ryan Crawford, who was killed Friday during a snowmobile accident. 

The state troopers responded to a reported snowmobile crash on NYS Trail C-4, near Satterlee Road in the town of Salisbury, Herkimer County, Friday at about 11:10 p.m.

Police said the initial investigation found that Crawford, 36, was operating his snowmobile south through a curved portion of the trail and struck two trees. Crawford was taken to Little Falls Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

State police said the investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing. 

A moment of silence was held for Crawford Saturday by Amsterdam Mayor Michael Villa at the Amsterdam Castle. Crawford's mother, Kim Smith, is the tax collector for the town of Amsterdam. 

According to Crawford's obituary, posted on the W.E. Autenrith Sons Funeral Home website, Crawford attended Marie Curie Elementary and Wilbur Lynch Middle School in Amsterdam and graduated from West Canada Valley Central School. Crawford was an electrician and worked for his father  A. Scott Crawford's business, Crawford Electric, until establishing his own business, RC Electric.

Calling hours will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, 7479 Main St., in Newport on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday at the Polish Community Home, 319 S. Washington St., Herkimer, at 1 p.m. Interment in Newport Cemetery will take place in the spring.
