Niskayuna police warn against scam

Report indicates that caller says he's a town police officer

Niskayuna police are warning local residents about a phone scam, in which a caller identified himself as a Niskayuna police officer.

A woman told police she received a call on Tuesday from a 646 area code and was told her social security number had been compromised. She was told a police officer would call her and give further advice.

During the second call - from a number Niskayuna police said was associated with the "Schenectady County Unified Communications Center" - a man told the woman he was a Niskayuna police officer.

The caller told the woman to go to her bank, empty and close her bank accounts and bring the money home. He said a new Social Security number would be issued to her.

The woman said both callers had accents, but she could provide no further details to police.

Niskayuna police said no officers or dispatchers had contacted the woman. Police said if anyone has experienced similar phone calls they should contact police at 518-630-0911.
