GLOVERSVILLE - A side street off Gloversville’s downtown was closed Sunday afternoon after the discovery of a sinkhole, police said.

Police and fire officials discovered the hole just before 2 p.m. after a report of a hazardous condition on Fremont Street, just off North Main Street, according to a release.

The city Department of Public Works responded, along with the city Water Department, resulting shutting a section of Fremont until the hole could be repaired.

Fremont is closed between North Main Street and the NBT Bank entrance.

North Main Street remained open after 4 p.m.

Though police described the sinkhole as large in a release, there was little to see later Sunday afternoon.

A section of plywood lay over what appeared to be the hole and two road barrels sat on that. Yellow caution tape surrounded the area.

Police asked members of the public to avoid the area.

Work to fix the hole is expected to begin Monday and additional road closures are likely as a result, police said.
