HALFMOON - The body of a 29-year old man was recovered on Tuesday afternoon from the Mohawk River after he intentionally drove a pickup truck into the water on late Tuesday morning, Saratoga County Sheriff's officials said.

The man was a resident of Ballston Spa officials said. No further identifying details have been released.

The incident happened at around 11:30 a.m. at Terminal Road, a short road next to the Route 9 Crescent Bridge, Undersheriff Richard Castle said.

A witness called 911 then reporting an old pickup going into the river there, Castle said.

The caller described the truck as an older model, dark truck, and the caller believed the driver was male, Castle said.

The Sheriff's dive team responded to the scene and was readying to try and find the truck. Castle said they believe they have a rough idea where the truck is. Poor visibility in the river is expected to lengthen the process, Castle said.

Water in the area is between 12 and 15 feet deep. Visibility is between six inches and a foot at the surface and basically non-existent at the bottom, Castle said.

Extracting the truck from the river took hours, with heavy rains making the process more difficult, officials said on Tuesday afternoon.

There have been similar incidents in that area in the past where drivers have taken cars into the river intentionally in the past, Castle said.

A 60-year-old man died in October 2017 after his car also went into the river at Terminal Road. Officials then called his death an apparent suicide.
