When one sits down to write a fitting memorial tribute to a community icon like Jane Golub, it quickly becomes apparent that it is an impossible task.

It’s not because it’s difficult to list all the many contributions she made to the community.

That’s actually pretty easy.

Scroll through past news articles and photographs of her at a banquet or a check presentation for some organization.

Or plug her name into a Google search and jot down each philanthropic event contained in the numerous pages that pop up. If you’ve got a lot of time, you can compile an impressive list.

You can find out how people felt about her by going to on various media Facebook pages or the pages of people who knew her best.

Put “Jane Golub” into a Twitter search and a long list of comments from political figures, business leaders and local celebrities will appear, giving one plenty of quotes to borrow for a tribute.

When we say writing a fitting memorial tribute to a person like Jane Golub is impossible, we don’t mean that it can’t be done.

We mean that in the way she lived her life, the causes she undertook, the donations she made and the time she gave to the community and individuals, such a tribute has already been written.

By Jane herself.

It’s in the people that she touched with her caring nature.

The way she looked into people’s eyes and wrapped both of her hands around theirs when she met them, as if she’d known them forever.

It’s in the enthusiasm and care she shared when she was around children. It’s in the knowing empathy she conveyed when she met with those suffering from breast cancer or heart disease.

It’s in that special look she has on her face in every photo she shared with her loving husband of 55 years, Neil.

If you’d never met Jane Golub, all the list of philanthropic activities and donations will tell you what she did. But they’ll only give you a sense of what she was.

For those fortunate enough to have benefited from her generosity and kindness and warmth and spirit of community, there is no greater story of her life that can be told than the one she composed herself as she lived every day.

Thank you, Jane Golub, for the gift of you.

We all will miss you dearly.
