High schools: Schalmont's D’Ambrosio runs fastest 100 in state

Mia D’Ambrosio of Schalmont ran the fastest 100 meters in the state this season, and was among the record-setters Saturday at the 54th annual Colonie Relay Carnival.

D’Ambrosio prevailed in 11.96 and qualified for the season-ending nationals.

Faith DeMars of Ballston Spa set a meet record in winning the 2,000 steeplechase (7:02.73), and Tyler Berg of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake set a meet record with a victory in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:17.73).

Colonie set a trio of boys’ meet relay records, with Michael Hermance, Josiah Kemp, Fabien DeSilva and Shai Young winning the 4x200 (1:29.75); Kemp, Young, Christian Hubbard and Hermance taking the 4x100 relay (42.77); and Kemp, Hubbard, Hermance and Connor McCauslin winning the 4x110 hurdle relay (59.99).
Hermance (11.02) edged Schenectady’s Trebor Davis (11.03) in the 100 dash.

Guilderland set a meet record in the boys’ sprint medley relay (3:29.60) with Life Nieves, Noah Tindale, Nicholas Soldevere and Jaxon Wicks).

The Colonie boys and Shenendehowa girls secured team titles.

MARSH GALOTTA

Areyanna Crumble of Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons won the 200 (27.67) and 100 hurdles (16.13), and Madison Relyea of Mayfield doubled in the 800 (2:28.51) and 1,500 (4:58.24) at the 53rd annual Marsh Galotta Invitational at Middleburgh.

Maple Hill won the girls’ team title with a sweep of the relays, and with Julia Pugliese winning the high jump (4-8), Long jump (15-7) and triple jump (33-8).

On the boys’ side, Nelon Priest of Bishop Gibbons won the 100 (11.78), Clayton Welch of Fort Plain won the 400 (53.44), Dylan Bumpus of Mayfield won the pole vault (12-6) and Tucker Damato of Duanesburg took the shot put (43-1).

Maple Hill also won all of the boys’ relays, and more than doubled Mayfield’s scoring output in winning the team championship.

BASEBALL

Dylan Custer went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI, and Ryan McCarroll, Terel Tillman and Custer joined on a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Saratoga Central Catholic beat Chester Academy 11-0 at the Section II-IX Challenge in Saugerties.

Jordan Catone, Dante Marin, Nick Winslow and Ross Garrow had two hits apiece for the 11-1 Saints, with Catone driving in two runs. The Saints have won 10 straight games.

Matt Tiberia knocked in two runs with two singles, and Sonny D’Antonio had a double and two singles as CBA defeated Guilderland 6-3 in a Suburban Council game.

Brenden Harris had a triple and single and scored twice for the Dutchmen, and Mason Steward added two singles.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons beat Mayfield 10-0 in Western Athletic Conference action and clinched a sectional berth for the fourth year in a row. Anthony Vicinanzo and Nick Kownack both had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a run for ND-BG, and Tyree Parker had two RBI.

Derek Haughey went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lift Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake over Queensbury 6-4 in a non-league game. Matt Chase had two hits for Queensbury and reached base four times.

Jonathan Cafarella went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and Mohonasen scored in all six innings of a 10-0 win over Watervliet at Joe Bruno Stadium. Seven other Mohonasen players drove in a run.

SOFTBALL

Lexi Garrison hit a two-run single in the second inning, and Hannah Garrett homered in the third to lift Shenendehowa over Maine-Endwell 3-0 at the Plainsmen’s Forever Remembered Tournament.

Mariana Abate and Ava Caputo shut down Maine-Endwell on a combined four-hitter with nine strikeouts. John Jay beat Shenendehowa in an earlier tournament game 2-1.

Columbia also split at the Forever Remembered Tournament, with Jess Patterson pitching a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts and going 2-for-3 with an RBI in a 3-0 win over Maine-Endwell. John Jay finished 2-0 with a 12-0 win over Columbia.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Drew Collins scored three times, Griffin King contributed two goals and two assists and Brock Behrman totaled a goal and three assists to help Niskayuna beat Shaker 8-4 in a Suburban Council game.

Niskayuna, the state’s No. 2-ranked Class A team, improved to 10-0 in the league and 12-0 overall.

Ethan Thomas backed Gregg Dort’s 12-save performance with four goals and two assists, and Ballston Spa defeated Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 15-2. Antonio Rossetti had a hat trick and an assist for the Scotties. and Payton Walsh and Lucas Bennice both had two goals and an assist.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Maddy Barnum scored six goals and set up another, and Ballston Spa used an 11-goal, first-half outburst to beat Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 15-8 in a Suburban Council game.

Sarah Rule had three goals and an assist for the Scotties, who moved to 8-4 in the league. Isabell Adams had two goals and an assist for Burnt Hills.

Amanda Nieman collected six goals and seven points, and Lauren Thompson contributed four goals and two assists in Guilderland’s 19-9 win over Shaker. Katie Julien and Kim Barbro both notched two goals for the Blue Bison.
