GUILDERLAND -- A Guilderland mother shot and killed her 5-year-old daughter and then killed herself, police said Saturday.
The mother and daughter were found Friday at 169 Schoolhouse Road.
Police Saturday identified the mother as Caitlin Melville, 27. A police release Saturday afternoon did not identify the victim, Melville’s daughter.
Melville was unemployed, police said. Her daughter was a kindergarten student at Westmere Elementary School in Guilderland, police said.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they determined Melville killed the girl, then herself. They did not release a motive.
“At this time we are unable to provide details of the motive surrounding this incident,” police said in a press release. “The investigation is ongoing and we have no further information at this time.”
Guilderland Central School District Superintendent Marie Wiles issued a statement Saturday.
“The Guilderland Central School District community is stunned and saddened over this news and we are all grieving this loss of life,” the statement read.
“A team of counselors, school psychologists, and social workers will be on hand at Westmere Elementary School in the coming days to provide support to any student, faculty or staff member who might need assistance. Support will also be available throughout the district’s other six school buildings and will remain in place as long as needed.”
