ROTTERDAM -- A Rotterdam man and his dog were helped from the Mohawk River Sunday by a passerby, police and firefighters, police and a witness said.

Both the man and the dog, a golden retriever, were OK, with the man suffering minor scrapes, police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Collins said.

The incident began about 2:30 p.m. at Lock 8 off Rice Road. The man was there with his two daughters and the dog when the dog jumped into the river, Collins said.

The man went in after the dog and made it back to the high concrete wall. Another man from Scotia, who was in the area, was able to reach down and help keep the man and dog stationary until further help arrived, Collins said.

Police arrived and helped hold them, as well. Schonowe firefighters then arrived with life jackets and ropes that they used to get the man and dog around to shore, Collins said.

Witness Bob DeSantis was passing by on his bike when the first emergency vehicles arrived. He posted a photo of the scene to the Rotterdam NY Look Out/Social Facebook page, where it garnered more than 100 likes and 20 shares.

"Emergency vehicles got there quickly and threw a life jacket and rope to man in the water, and ended up getting the man and dog out in short order," DeSantis told The Gazette via Facebook.
