ALBANY — Albany Medical Center announced Tuesday that longtime CEO James J. Barba will retire in 2020.
Barba has been president and CEO since 1995, a quarter-century period in which the facility emerged from near-bankruptcy and evolved to a large network of facilities and affiliated hospitals that stretches from Hudson to Saratoga.
During his tenure, Albany Med also helped drive the revitalization of its surrounding neighborhood, undertook several hundred million dollars worth of construction projects of its own and raised $280 million through capital campaigns.
Barba’s association with Albany Med dates to 1979, when he was named a trustee of Albany Medical College. He was later named to the consolidated board of directors of Albany Medical Center following the merger of the Albany Medical Center Hospital and Albany Medical College.
He will serve through March 31, 2020; the next CEO of Albany Med is expected to be announced this summer.
