SCHENECTADY - A downed tree Wednesday caused a small fire on power lines and closed a Schenectady street as crews worked.

The incident also knocked out power to about customers in the area of the fallen tree, according to the National Grid site.

The incident happened at about 10:20 a.m. on Green Street, near North Ferry Street.

The falling tree hit the power line and caught wire insulation on fire. Schenectady fire Lt. Benjamin Yachler could be seen using a dry chemical fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

National Grid responded to the scene.

The National Grid site reported 25 customers without power in the direct area of the incident, with a restoration time of about 12:45 p.m. The site also reported about 500 customers without power just east of the incident in the area of Union and Jay streets. Estimated restoration time for that outage was 1 p.m.
