Glens Falls won the state Federation Class B Basketball Tournament on March 24, and it was all because of Joseph Girard III. Let’s take a look back on his amazing season:

November–March: Girard started the season on a high note. He was recruited by Syracuse University to play basketball for Jim Boeheim’s Syracuse Orange team. I bet Girard was recruited by Syracuse because of his average of 48.6 points per game. Also, he is a great foul shooter, going 88 percent from the line his whole varsity career! Girard then got Glens Falls cruising in the regular season, and with the help of his two cousins, they went a perfect 18-0 in their league, and with only one loss out of their conference, which was in a tournament in Florida. As they easily won over Schalmont in the Section 2 finals, Girard and his team were ready for the state championship.

March 6–16: Now it was time for the NYSPHSAA playoff. Glens Falls won 77-57, 84-76, 83-63, where Girard had many points. They then had to play Lowville in the NYSPHSAA finals, and in this game, Girard needed to be a hero. With three seconds left, his cousin Trent passed it in to Joseph Girard, who scored the winning layup!

After the game, he said: “I knew I had to put it up. I had to keep my eyes on the rim, just like my dad tells me.” That moment must have felt good! By the time the NYSPHSAA championship ended, the Mr. NY Basketball award was given to — Joseph Girard! Good job, Joe! But now, they would have to deal with teams winning in places like New York City, Long Island, and Buffalo in the Federation Tournament. But still, these other teams were no match to guard Girard.

March 23 and 24: Glens Falls would first have to play against South Bronx Prep from the Public Schools Athletic League. Glens Falls played a great game, but it was tough. It was close, but Glens Falls won 77-70, and Girard had 42 points. Now they were in the championship vs. Cardinal O’Hara, winner of the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association. This was a big game for Joseph Girard. Girard had 43 points, and his cousin Trent had 21. It had happened. Joseph Girard and the Indians won. Even Jimmer Fredette didn’t ever win The Federation Tournament of Champions before. What a great team!

Congrats to Glens Falls for a great season. After the season, Girard was invited to compete in the March Madness High School Basketball 3-point Contest. He didn’t win, but was very close to getting to the top two. Go, Joe, we wish him another spectacular season as a freshman at Syracuse.
