Niskayuna native Molly O’Donnell is the new head coach for SUNY Cortland softball, the school’s athletic department announced Wednesday in a press release.
O’Donnell, a 2009 Niskayuna High School graduate, served last season as associate head coach for former head coach Julie Lenhart — who recently retired — and was also an assistant at Cortland for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. O’Donnell served as an assistant coach at Columbia in 2017 and 2018, and coached at Skidmore in 2014.
“I am incredibly honored and extremely excited to lead Cortland’s distinguished softball program,” O’Donnell, an Ithaca College graduate, said in the school’s press release announcing her hire. “I have been very fortunate to be a part of the Cortland athletic department both as an assistant and associate head coach — it is a special place, and I cannot wait to get started. I would like to thank [athletic director] Mike Urtz and the entire search committee for entrusting me with this opportunity."
Last season, Cortland went 31-16, and won both the SUNYAC regular-season and postseason titles.
