SCHENECTADY -- A 7-year-old boy was seriously injured late Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle on Ashmore Avenue.

Schenectady police had not identified the boy by late evening.

The accident occurred at about 4:42 p.m. on a section of Ashmore situated between Central Parkway and Eastern Parkway. The street, located behind Congregation Gates of Heaven synagogue, was closed to traffic through early evening.

"The driver of the vehicle is being cooperative," said Sgt. Jeffrey McCutcheon, who was at the scene of the accident. "The 7-year-old was transported to Ellis Hospital with life-threatening injuries."

Police later said the boy had been stabilized and transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment.

Police have asked anyone with information about the accident to contact the department's traffic division
