SARATOGA COUNTY -- A $50,000 state conservation grant will be used to develop part of the Palmertown Range trail in the southern Adirondack foothills of northern Saratoga County, the Open Space Institute said.

The grant through the state's Environmental Protection Fund will be used to hire a consultant and start implementing key recommendations from a master plan completed last year, which calls for development of a 13-mile trail through the Palmertown Range from Moreau to Saratoga Springs.

The OSI, a private land conversation organization, last year acquired the 860-acre “Smith Farm” in Moreau as the proposed northern end of the trail system, and some money will be used for work at that site, which includes two miles of Hudson River shoreline, most of which is forested.

“The protection of the Palmertown Range offers one of the best and last opportunities to protect a continuous swath of land between the Green and Adirondack mountains, providing people with a place to enjoy nature and wildlife with a corridor for habitat and movement,” said Kim Elliman OSI’s president and CEO. “This grant furthers OSI’s commitment to saving land for healthy communities and goes a long way in helping us achieve long-term conservation goals.”

In addition to providing additional recreational opportunities, the Palmertown Range will provide wildlife with a corridor for habitat and movement, officials said.
