CAPITAL REGION -- The Fourth of July is less than a week away, and it might be a good idea to plan ahead with all the fireworks displays painting the sky.

Fireworks displays around Scotia, Troy and Saratoga Springs will kick off the holiday Friday. Some of these aren’t your regular fireworks showings, though.

Between a barbecue competition, a live show from the frontman of Styx and a few baseball games, locals have a lot of options to pair fireworks with this holiday.

In Scotia Friday, the celebration starts with a ski show, continues with a live music performance in Freedom Park and ends with some fireworks at 9:15 p.m. But if you don’t mind spending a little extra money Friday, you can check out fireworks after a ValleyCats game (and 14 others throughout the season) and Saturday at a Lebanon Valley race.

On Thursday, July 4, over 15 shows will take place across the region, with some of the most popular ones being in Saratoga Springs, Albany and Lake George.

Albany’s Empire State Plaza celebration, which has been going on since 1976, will likely draw a crowd of 20,000. This year's event features musical performances by a pair of local acts, folk singer Sawyer Fredericks and the first New York State's 4th of July Celebration appearance by the Powerhouse Funk Band.

Powerhouse's drummer and leader George Spencer, Jr. plans to put on "a memorable show for those who have yet to hear and see us perform."

Powerhouse will warm the crowd up for a set by Styx frontman Dennis DeYoung, as he performs Styx hits such as “Come Sail Away” and “Mr. Roboto.”

"We are very excited to open for one of the best rock stars to grace the stage," said Spencer Jr. on behalf of his band.

For some after-the-holiday festivities, Schenectady County SummerNight will feature fireworks of its own. And the music isn’t over, either.

The rock band Smash Mouth will play the show before the sparks fly.

Troy will also host its annual Troy Pig Out BBQ competition featuring its own fireworks-driven grand finale.
