ALBANY - Two 18-year-old Amsterdam men face felony assault charges, accused of punching state troopers after being confronted over fireworks, state police said.

Two troopers were treated afterward for minor injuries, state police said.

The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July at the Empire State Plaza after a trooper on bicycle patrol spotted someone setting off roman candle fireworks in an area crowded with people just as the evening plaza fireworks were getting underway, state police said.

The trooper went to arrest the man, but the man resisted, punching the trooper in the face, state police said. A second man joined in and also punched the trooper, state police said.

Other troopers soon arrived and took both suspects into custody after a brief struggle.

A state police release did not name the two 18-year-olds. A state police arrest blotter also did not include their names, but identified them as from Amsterdam. State police do not release the names of those under 19 charged with felonies as they are potential youthful offenders, a spokesman said. The defendants' names were also not immediately available through the court system.

One 18-year-old faces one count of second-degree assault, a felony, along with criminal mischief and resisting arrest, misdemeanors, according to the state police blotter. The other faces one count each of second-degree assault, along with misdemeanor second-degree reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.

The blotter also indicates a third 18-year-old from Amsterdam also faces a misdemeanor second-degree reckless endangerment count related to the incident, but no other charges.
