SCHENECTADY - A city man strangled a 5-year-old boy last month in Schenectady, causing injury, authorities said.

The boy was treated at the scene, but did not require further treatment, a prosecutor said.

Darvell Elliott, 28, of Altamont Avenue, was arrested last week and charged with one count of second-degree assault and second-degree strangulation, felonies, along with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.

Elliott is accused of taking hold of the child's neck the afternoon of June 17 and applying pressure, causing injury, according to the police allegations.

The two felony counts can be charged based on any type of physical injury. The felony assault count is a felony based on the injury and the victim's age as under the age of 7.

Police based the charges on statements of a witness and the suspect, among other information, according to police allegations.

Elliott was arraigned and ordered held on $5,000 bond, which has since been posted, officials said.
