COBLESKILL - A 17-year-old has been charged in connection with the early Thursday shooting in Cobleskill, state police said Thursday afternoon.
State police also confirmed the victim in the shooting, a 50-year-old man, has since died from his injuries. His name was not released pending family notifications, troopers said.
The 17-year-old is accused of shooting the man in the head at about 12:45 a.m. Thursday at 435 Lamont District Road in Cobleskill, state police said.
The victim suffered the wound to the back of his head. He was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, but died later Thursday, state police said.
In a release prior to announcing the victim's death, state police indicated the 17-year-old had been charged with first-degree assault and first-degree criminal use of a firearm, felonies.
State police did not release the 17-year-old's name, citing a policy not to do so for those age 17 or 18 unless the defendant is charged with a top-level felony, like murder, or a sex offense.
It was not immediately clear when or if the death of the victim would lead to upgraded charges.
Information on defendants age 17 or 18 charged with felonies is available through the court system. That will change for 17-year-olds in October.
Further information on the defendant could not be immediately obtained through the court system.
The 17-year-old was sent to the Schoharie County Jail, state police said.
The incident remained under investigation by the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Unit.
