COBLESKILL -- State police Friday identified the man shot and killed in early Thursday’s shooting in Cobleskill.

Timothy J. Oldorff, 50, of Cobleskill, died of his wounds later Thursday at Albany Medical Center, state police said.

A 17-year-old was charged in the shooting prior Oldorff’s death with first-degree assault and first-degree criminal use of a firearm, felonies.

State police have yet to identify the defendant, citing a policy not to name defendants in felony cases against 17- and 18-year-olds, except in certain kinds of cases, though the court system continues to view those cases as open.

A murder charge is an exception to the state police policy, officials said.

It was unclear when or if charges against the teen would be upgraded.

The 17-year-old is accused of shooting Oldorff in the head at about 12:45 a.m. Thursday at 435 Lamont District Road in Cobleskill, state police said.

The victim suffered the wound to the back of his head. He was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, but died later Thursday, state police said.

The 17-year-old was sent to the Schoharie County Jail, state police said.

The incident remained under investigation by the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Unit.
