NORTHAMPTON - A search for a boater missing on the Great Sacandaga Lake and believed drowned ended Sunday without finding him, state police said.

It is to continue Monday morning.

The state police responded to the area of the Northampton State Campground just before 9 p.m. Saturday for a report of a missing boater.

The boater was swimming in the lake off of a boat in the area of the campground when the boater had difficulty swimming and went underwater, state police said. The person's identify has not been released. A state police release late Sunday afternoon did not indicate whether the boater was male or female.

The state police Underwater Recovery Team responded to the area and searched much of Sunday. They were assisted by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, Fulton County Sheriff's Office, Saratoga County Sheriff's Office and multiple fire departments.

The search closed the Northampton boat launch Sunday and boaters were asked to avoid the area as the divers worked.
