SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Police officers descended on the Saratoga Race Course backstretch Wednesday in search of the suspect in last weekend's assault on a woman by a man on a bike.

Saratoga Springs police Lt. Robert Jillson confirmed to reporters on the scene that police were there looking for a man who matched the description of the weekend assailant, according to CBS6.

An officer spotted a man who matched the description, approached him and the man fled into the race course backstretch, Jillson told reporters, CBS6 reporter Lynzi DeLuccia reported on twitter.

The man spotted Wednesday continues to be sought, Jillson told reporters.

Officers could be seen stopping cars leaving the backstretch and asking for identification at the dorm.

The incident that led to Wednesday's search was reported Sunday by a woman who told police that at about 11 p.m. the night before a man had grabbed her around her head and neck in the area of Phila Street and Nelson Avenue.

She was able to break the man's grasp, run and yell for help, she told police.

Police spotted a man matching the bicyclist's description on surveillance video in the Putnam Street area prior to the attack, police said.

The woman reported she had left the Caroline-Putnam street area on foot at about 11 p.m. Saturday evening and headed east on Phila Street.

She told police she heard the bicyclist approaching from behind and stopped. The man then stopped next to her and grabbed her around her head and neck.

After she broke the hold, the man fled the area on the bike in an unknown direction. The woman suffered what police described as a minor injury and did not require medical attention.

Police said that the incident appears to be a random act.

The man is described as between 20 and 30 years old with a darker skin tone, possibly Hispanic, and was estimated at about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and had a slight build. He was wearing a red T-shirt with white lettering or a white logo across the chest. He had lighter blue jeans, a fitted baseball hat that was blue on the front and white on the back.

Anyone with information on the man or who has surveillance from about 11 p.m. Saturday night along the described route is asked to contact the Saratoga Springs Police Department at 518-584-1800.
