MOHAWK — A tractor-trailer hauling 42,000 pounds of latex paint crashed Tuesday in the Town of Mohawk, officials said.

While no one was seriously hurt in the crash, the incident led to some of the paint spilling onto the roadway and the crash blocked Route 30A for a time, officials said.

The incident happened just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on Route 30A, near Commons Road.

The tractor-trailer, operated by Buanno Transport, struck a retaining wall and then a tree. The driver, identified as Paul Giblin, 55, of Fonda, wasn't seriously hurt.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Wednesday.

While Giblin was out of the rig by the time first responders arrived, a large amount of paint was leaking from the trailer, Montgomery County Emergency Management officials said.

The county's Haz-Mat team responded and called in more containment capacity in the form of a state DEC spill response trailer. Environmental contractor NRC also responded to replenish exhausted supplies.

The entire operation lasted until 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.

The Town of Mohawk Fire Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, state police and Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps. were among the first on the scene. In all, Montgomery County Emergency Management acknowledged help from more than a dozen different agencies in the response.
