BROADALBIN - A Gloversville man broke into a Broadalbin church Sunday in search of money, Fulton County sheriff's officials said.

William E. Markle, 46, of 5 Homestead Drive, faces one count of third-degree burglary, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.

Markle is accused of breaking into the First Presbyterian Church in the village. Deputies responded after receiving a report of a suspicious person there, officials said.

Markle is accused of breaking into the church and then into a separate locked office inside, officials said.

Officials credited observant citizens with alerting deputies and helping lead to the arrest.
