NISKAYUNA - A Thursday afternoon fire at a Niskayuna home claimed the life of a dog, the Niskayuna Fire District 1 chief said.

No residents were home at the time and no firefighters were injured, Chief Dale Lingenfelter said.

Firefighters were called to the home at 1409 Via Del Mar just before 3:30 p.m.

Neighbors spotted smoke and called 911, Lingenfelter said.

Firefighters got into the home and doused the fire in about 15 to 20 minutes, Lingenfelter said.

Firefighters also found the dog, who had succumbed to the smoke, Lingenfelter said.

The initial investigation suggested the fire originated on the home’s first floor, he said.

Firefighters from Schenectady, Niskayuna District 2 and Stanford Heights assisted, along with county investigators.
