In the Pocket: Danzy Jr. reaches back to past

Robert Danzy Jr. is aggressively — and passionately — promoting an old bowling sanctioning body that might not be too familiar to many local keglers. But there are several good reasons to check it out.

The 43-year-old lefty from Albany is the new president of The National Bowling Association’s (TNBA) Albany Senate. The Albany High grad and UAlbany product is busy trying to get the word out about his organization, which has been around for 80 years. The TNBA is national in scope and it has four regions: Eastern, Southern, Western and Central. Each region has smaller local organizations, called senates.

“The TNBA is another sanctioning body that is similar to the USBC,” Danzy said. “It’s actually been in existence since 1939. It came about when African-Americans and other races couldn’t be members of the USBC [then the ABC] or bowl in their leagues.”

For that reason, the TNBA membership has been dominated by minorities looking for an opportunity to bowl. But now, Danzy is reaching out to all bowlers of every race, religion and gender, and his organization is growing quickly, especially locally.

“Now, of course, everyone is allowed to bowl in our organization. It’s available all over the country,” Danzy said. “We have different senates or organizations throughout the country, and we run local, regional and national events. The Eastern Region, for example, consists of senates from New York all the way down to the Carolinas. It’s a pretty big territory.”

Danzy pointed out that Schenectady’s David Henderson, a senior scratch bowler who has dabbled in regional pro events, played a major role in bringing TNBA to the Capital Region in 1991. Henderson was stationed at Lowry Air Force base in Denver, Colorado, at the time, and he met current TNBA president Luther Moses while there. Action Lanes in Albany was the first local center to have any TNBA affiliation, and Henderson was the local organization’s first treasurer. He also competes regularly in New Era Senior Tournament events.

TNBA events have been expanding lately, and one will make a local appearance Oct. 26 when the Albany TNBA Senate Trio Tourney comes to Towne Bowling Academy for five squads, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Based on 100 entries, top prize will be $1,800 per team. Entry fee is $30 per bowler.

“There are two big pluses to TNBA events,” Danzy said. “One is the amount of tournaments we run. Now, I’m opening up and running more locally. I have a doubles event at East Greenbush Bowling Center every year, and many of the bowlers know about that one. The one we’re running in Schenectady in October is reaching out to a different group. I’m trying to get people in that area exposed to our organization.”

Danzy said TNBA also has another compelling draw.

“We also have an awards component. We have an awards program that gives out one award for a 300 game and one for an 800 triple every year,” Danzy said. “The USBC no longer does that. They give out awards one per a career. We also give out awards for a 299 game and other awards for the lower average bowlers. They can shoot a 500 or 600 triple and might get a patch.”

Sanction fee for TNBA membership is $21.

“That gives you the right to bowl in any tournament, plus the awards program,” Danzy said. “We also have implemented a youth scholarship program, and I’m working on  getting some local youth tournaments going in this area, as well. It only costs $10 or a junior sanction fee.
“Our tournaments have very low entry fees. The typical entry fee for our adult  tournaments is just $25 or $30. Our main goal is to get people to join, have a good time and win some money. Our regional events are as close as Hartford, Connecticut, Springfield, Massachusetts, or Providence, Rhode Island. And we also have a major national tournament that is in Las Vegas this year.”

Danzy is no stranger to Capital Region scratch bowlers. He’s rolled 39 perfect games and 17 800 triples. His 837 at the now defunct Playdium Bowling Center was one of the few 800s ever bowled there. He also won several Huck Finn scratch tournaments, including the inaugural televised one that also featured Steve Wagoner, Mark Kepner and Bob Faragon.

“Jeff Segel always says that I’m the answer to a trivia question about who won that first show,” Danzy said.

For more information about TNBA or its local tournaments,  you can visit its website tnbainc.org or contact Danzy at 518-507-2218 or [email protected].
