ROTTERDAM — After coming so close in Week 1 to obtaining a signature win, Ballston Spa gets another chance at earning one next Friday.
The Scotties, too, will go into that home matchup against Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake with plenty of momentum, as Ballston Spa scored a 41-13 win Friday at Mohonasen in a Section II Class A Grasso Division game. Senior David Rodak and junior CJ Guarino each scored two touchdowns for Ballston Spa, which led 27-0 after three quarters.
The Scotties lost 10-6 to Queensbury in Week 1, then picked up a 49-6 win against Gloversville before topping Mohonasen.
“We just hope to keep it going next week against Burnt Hills,” Ballston Spa senior quarterback Keegan Zoller said.
Against Mohonasen (1-2, 1-2), Ballston Spa (2-1, 2-1) dominated throughout the evening’s matchup. Besides outdoing Mohonasen 368-238 in total yards of offense, Ballston Spa’s defense forced four turnovers — a pair of fumbles and a pair of interceptions — while the Scotties also blocked a punt and a point-after attempt.
While Ballston Spa made too many little mistakes for first-year head coach Jason Ohnsman’s liking against Mohonasen, the 2008 Ballston Spa graduate appreciated how hard his Scotties played on every down.
“It’s more of a mindset. We talk about if every single day,” Ohnsman said. “We want to play fast. We want to play physical.”
Ballston Spa led 20-0 at halftime, as Rodak scored both of his touchdowns in the first half and Guarino had one of his scores. Rodak’s second touchdown came on a 69-yard run to start the second quarter, as that run provided the majority of the senior’s team-leading 104 rushing yards on seven carries.
After halftime, junior Jovie Acacio added a touchdown for Ballston Spa before Mohonasen senior Alek Britten rushed for a Mighty Warriors touchdown. Britten later found senior Keegan Jarvis for a 45-yard touchdown, but that came after touchdown runs for Ballston Spa’s Guarino and senior James Prastio.
“I thought we made some plays when we needed to make plays,” Ohnsman said. “We left some out there.”
Prastio set up his touchdown with an interception, while Guarino also had an interception for Ballston Spa. For the Scotties, senior Michael Lupo and Prastio recovered Mohonasen fumbles, while junior Nate Lang blocked a Mohonasen punt to set up Acacio’s touchdown run.
For Mohonasen, junior Gino Lanaro and junior Tyler Reinke each recovered a fumble.
Britten was 14 of 31 passing for 190 yards, while Zoller was 6 of 11 passing for 111 yards despite not attempting a pass after halftime.
Last season, Ballston Spa made the playoffs, but finished 4-5 overall after falling to Averill Park in the Section II Class A quarterfinals and to Niskayuna in a Week 9 crossover game.
“We weren’t together,” Zoller said of the Scotties’ finish to the 2018 season. “This year, from camp in July, we’ve been together.”
“I have a great senior class,” Ohnsman said. “They’re really the leaders of this team every day in practice. Those are the guys who are really getting it done right now.”
Beating 3-0 Burnt Hills next week, Rodak said, would only give the Scotties more fuel.
“It would be a huge motivator for us,” Rodak said.
It’s a win, too, that the Scotties think they’re good enough to earn — and they’re not interested in taking any moral victories from playing the three-time defending area Class A champion close next week.
“That’s not good enough,” Zoller said. “We all in the locker room want to win it and we believe we can win it.”
