From the very beginning, members of the Schenectady Printing Association were excited and enthusiastic.

“It will be our aim to make The Daily Gazette the newsiest and best newspaper in the city,” read an advertisement promoting the paper-and-ink product that first rolled off the presses on Oct. 1, 1894.

The association was confident the daily newspaper would win readers.

“They will read The Daily Gazette because they will want to know what is going on, and we will tell them,” the advertisement continued.

Those words remain true 125 years later. From that first autumn — when the Schenectady County Roads Association, the YMCA’s new evening school for business courses and Union College’s 20-10 football victory over Syracuse all were in the news — The Gazette is still telling readers what’s going on.

The paper remains a witness to history, both on the local and national levels.

Today’s special anniversary section is a celebration of the newspaper’s rich past and a positive and powerful look toward its future.
